Why I Love My Marvel The Avengers Box Set

I bought the Avengers Assemble box set from Amazon on a whim, having seen only Iron Man previously on the TV.

I have now watched them all multiple times and I'm really pleased with my purchase.

In this article, I will discuss what makes them so good and rank the movies in the order I like them most.

See if you agree with my assessment of them and leave a comment if you agree or disagree!

How Many Movies In The Avengers Blu Ray Box Set?

6 (yes, that's six movies for a low price)

I used to watch movies all the time when I was younger, but with the pressures of life, work and family, somehow I have gotten very out of date.

I was therefore looking for a way to catch up on a few newer ones, so was on the lookout for Iron Man, Thor, etc.

Then I saw this Marvel box set which contains 6 films for only £30 in the UK: Bargain!

In this set you get:

  • Iron Man
  • Iron Man 2
  • The Hulk
  • Thor
  • Captain America
  • Avengers Assemble

I think the last one was called just "Avengers" in the US, it had to be changed for the UK so we wouldn't get confused.

...and if you are American, I challenge you to find out what I'm talking about!

This is the full "phase 1" box set of Marvel's The Avengers - the set I own. All 6 movies, including Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor. IMO, you can't go wrong with this, but note that if you're an extras junkie, this set doesn't include the bonus disks you may find when you buy them separately. ...but hey, what am I talking about? If you're a fan then you probably have them all already, right?

Which is the best Avengers movie?

(Tricky one!)

So here's my list in order of best to worst after watching all of them, except for Avengers Assemble:

  1. Thor
  2. Iron Man
  3. Captain America
  4. Iron Man 2
  5. The Hulk

Where will Avengers Assemble go on the list once I have watched it?

Will it go straight to number one, or will Thor reign supreme?

Thor

Thor [Blu-ray]
Thor [Blu-ray]
This is a highly unique and original movie. Thor is a super-hero unlike any other and there's plenty of humour on offer too. This is the series' first outing away from planet earth, although still involving our home. The special effects are beautiful and the interplay between Thor, his brother Loki, and the rest of the cast is priceless. If you would like to read more about it, then see my review.

Which is the best Avengers movie (Part 2)?

Updated movie rank

So here's my list in order of best to worst after watching all of them, including Avengers Assemble:

  1. Avengers Assemble
  2. Thor
  3. Iron Man
  4. Captain America
  5. Iron Man 2
  6. The Hulk

It was a close run thing between Avengers Assemble and Thor for the top spot, but in the end I just love Robert Downey Junior's Iron Man.

He plays Tony Stark so well that I really miss him in Thor (well, I will the next time I watch it).

*Update* About a year later and I still feel I got the order right. That's not to say that I don't enjoy the ones "lower" in the list - and I have enjoyed watching them all with my daughter recently, at least that's my excuse!

...But what do you think?

Let me know in the comments section

Iron Man [Blu-ray]
Iron Man [Blu-ray]
The first move in the series and (I think) one of the best. Find out how Tony Stark goes from naive techie to awesome super-hero! In the first few scenes, you may wonder what is going on, and you may not even like his character at first. However, his capture by strange militant forces soon gets your sympathy and what happens next will grab your attention.

Captain America: The First Avenger (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Captain America: The First Avenger (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Captain America has its fair share of humour, but also has a novel way of bringing our World War 2 hero up to date. There's some nice little moments of wartime stage action that hark back to a different era. That sets up the Captain as an old fashioned hero, with an attitude that keeps him in good stead for the rest of the series.

The full Avengers team get together for the first time, with explosive results - in more ways than one! This time, they face a startling new threat, led by a familiar enemy. The question is, can they overcome their differences and pull together in time to fend off disaster?

What's the connection between Thor and Shakespeare?

Thor - The Tenuous Link

Here's a bit of trivia for you.

You probably know that Tom Hiddleston plays Loki in Thor and The Avengers.

Well, did you know he also plays the young Hal in Henry IV part 1 and 2, as well as Henry V in Henry V (funnily enough) as part of the BBC production of "The Hollow Crown".

Of course, Thor was directed by Kenneth Branagh ...who also played Henry V in his own production movie of the same play!

Perhaps that's why Thor speaks in a semi-Shakespearean way all the time?

It's not that he's a god, he's just in training for the RSC!

What Next For The Avengers?

The next instalments of the Marvel Avengers movies are Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

These are the movies in what has been dubbed "Avengers Phase 2" and all three are great in their own right.

I'm particularly impressed by the Winter Soldier and wrote a review.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to see all that this series has to offer!

Below is the teaser for Iron Man 3.

Ok, there are a couple of plot holes but I still enjoyed it immensely.

Thor 2: The Dark World Trailer

Thor was one of my favourite movies in Avengers Phase 1, so I was very much looking forward to his next outing in Thor: The Dark World.

Now that I've seen it, I'm pleased to say that it doesn't disappoint.

There are plenty of twists and turns to the tale, some expected, and some not so much....
